When Ved Awasthi got married at 24 years old in 2002, she could scarcely have imagined the misfortunes awaiting her.

Just six months into her marriage, her husband passed away. Already pregnant then, she was reeling from the trauma, but support was not what she found. Her life for the next five years was taunts, verbal abuse – pain.

 She finally found solidarity among other women who were widowed during the civil war, and decided to mobilize all widows to stand together in solidarity. Such is the agony that women who have lost their husbands experience, that some prefer to be known as ‘single women’ instead.

 At Women For Human Rights, Single Women Group, Awasthi focuses her energies on some of the most pernicious practices targeted at single women, including: witchcraft accusations, public humiliation, and exclusion from religious ceremonies and formal employment sector.

 She is an active campaigner for the eradication of violence against women. Her indefatigable efforts have helped to link the single women from the nine districts of the far western region of Nepal, allowing them to demand for dignity in a strong collective voice, bringing more attention to the unfair practices directed at them. Her efforts have also led to single women being included during local governance consultations.

 To ensure that these vulnerable women, especially those from rural areas, are able to forge independent livelihoods, Awasthi forms savings and credit groups, and helps them to source for funding and establish small businesses.

 Awasthi is also skilled in ccounseling and locating legal aid for women in need.
